Film Friday

April 27, 2012 by Paqueenie Leave a Comment

I feel a little inert this week and realized I haven’t updated my blog for a while. But, it’s been busy. Last week was over to Eau Claire (twice), once for the College Girl’s recital, which was beautiful.

On my second trip to Eau Claire, I stopped at a camera store and bought a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 and traded my 50mm f/1.8 FD lens for a 50 f/1.4, which I assume is the equivalent of upgrading the AF nifty fifty to the USM f/1.4 (minus the USM). It’s difficult finding anything other than consumer grade film in country towns. I wasted a lot of the Ektar trying to work out the minimum focus distance of the new lens, as I find it hard to “fill the frame” at 50mm (a landscape shooter, I am not), and it’s hard to work out what’s going on with the old camera. But, I got a few shots of Micki that I liked. I can only say that film and a totally manual camera is challenging with a subject that won’t stay still … exposure, focusing, fiddling, but fun. And again, it seems to me that the depth of field on the AE-1 seems far more shallow than on my 5D. i’m sure a 1000 geeks would argue otherwise, full frame is full frame, or is it not?

Scanning negatives is tedious work and I do question, “Um, why am I doing this again?”

And I’m not really sure, but I like it.
